Siding Tips

As our homes age, many of them in our HOA require siding repair or will in the near future. With that in mind there are several options available to address the repairs:

  1. Continuation of caulking and repainting. The least expensive option, but a temporary cosmetic facelift and one that is useless once warping and/or rotting has started in the cedar siding. The warping and rotting accelerates once moisture gets in behind the siding.
  2. Replacement of damaged siding with cedar planking. Many homeowners have chosen this option, which requires beveled cedar planks.
  3. Total siding replacement. Bids of $50-$60K to replace the cedar with James Hardie plank cement siding on the entire home have been received in our HOA (cedar would be even more expensive).

The siding used is:
Western red cedar bevel siding = plain bevel, ¾ inch beveled, 9” actual height, available in various lengths.
